Origin & History

Lavender is native to the Mediterranean region, the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia. It is thought to have been discovered around 2500 years ago. Traces of lavender were found in ancient Egypt and ancient Rome.

Traditionally, lavender oil was used for perfumery purposes and in bath water. In Ancient Greece, they used lavender essential oil for embalming practices.

Lavender oil was even a popular perfume in Ancient Egypt. It was also used for its fragrance when washing and bathing in Ancient Rome. In the 20th century lavender essential oil became more popular in southern Europe.

A french chemist in the 1930s, René-Maurice Gattefossé, is said to have burned his hand in his laboratory and used lavender essential oil to help treat the burn. Essential oils can be used in skin care products for all skin types, however they must be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to skin.

Lavender essential oil is not suitable for consumption, and please consult a doctor before use in pregnancy. It is recommended to do a patch test with the dilute oil to check for sensitive skin or irritation to the oil.
