What is Cosmetic Grade Salt?

Feel the effects of ancient ingredients with our natural cosmetics-grade salt.

Whether used for relaxation or skin rejuvenation, cosmetic grade salts are a modern maker’s staple. Sourced from the seas and earth, this natural element is filled to the brim with skin-loving minerals. Plus, it boasts a brilliant natural exfoliating ability.

But what exactly is cosmetics salt? Chemically, all salts are composed of sodium chloride - except Epsom (magnesium chloride). Don’t be alarmed by the familiar name,  the rough salts used in your bath soaks and facemasks are a world away from the shaker on your table. This is all thanks to their grain and mineral content, with many of the latter being key to body, hair, and skin health.

Now available in their purest form, our natural salts come hand-selected from the globe’s finest suppliers, and ready for use. Why not discover what we have to offer?

How to Use Cosmetic Grade Salt

Ready to indulge in relaxation?

These simple salt packages do more than meets the eye. Whether you’re using our Epsom salt as a standalone bath soak for aching muscles, or want to mix up a recipe of your very own, there’s plenty to be made.

Why not use salt to create an exfoliating body scrub, dissolve in water for a skin-softening bath, or blend with water for a refreshing toner mist? With our all natural ingredients, the options are endless.

The Benefits of Cosmetic Grade Salt

So, why choose salt?

Cosmetic grade salt has earned its place amongst our customers' favourite ingredients for good reason!

This naturally brilliant ingredient offers a great exfoliating alternative to environmentally damaging microplastics and beads, promising to remove dead skin with ease. The USPs don’t end there though - some cosmetic grade salts are thought to have antimicrobial properties (but can’t be used as a substitute for preservatives)!

Convinced? We certainly are! Shop our full range of cosmetic grade salt above. Be sure to browse individual listings for a full properties rundown!

Buying Salts: FAQs

Can you use table salt for salt scrub?

While technically possible, using table salt for a salt scrub isn't the best choice. Its fine grains can be quite harsh on the skin, leading to irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Table salt lacks the more rounded, gentle edges found in larger-grained salts like sea salt or Epsom salt, which are typically preferred for body scrubs due to their smoother exfoliation.

For a more skin-friendly scrub, it's better to opt for these larger, natural salts. They offer effective exfoliation without the abrasive quality of table salt. Plus, they often come with additional mineral benefits that can be more nourishing for the skin. So, while you could use table salt in a pinch, for a more pleasant and skin-caring experience, seeking out alternatives designed for body care is recommended.

Is cosmetic grade salt the same as table salt?

Our cosmetic grade salt range heavily features Himalayan and Epsom salts, both of which are slightly different from your usual table salt beyond their coarser appearances.

Himalayan salt is a type of rock salt mined in the Himalayan mountains. It’s considered to be a pure form of salt because of its minimal processing and trace minerals - most of which aren’t found in other types of salt.

Epsom salt, on the other hand, is made up of magnesium and sulfate - a completely different composition from table salt’s sodium chloride!

Other options, such as ‘Dead Sea’ salts, are packed with more minerals than their table-dwelling counterparts.

On the whole, table salt’s fine grain, and additions for consumption including iodine make it different from most cosmetic options on the market.

Is cosmetic grade salt safe to use on my skin?

Yes, cosmetic grade salt is generally safe to use on the skin. In fact, it’s been a famed skincare and bathing product ingredient for centuries! Whether derived from land or sea, this coarse ingredient makes a perfect all-natural exfoliant when mixed with carriers such as oils. It’s also added to bath water as a soak, to bath bomb creations, and mixed in with toners for its purifying effects!

With this being said, when experimenting with any new ingredient, it’s important to take skin sensitivity levels into account. You may want to do a patch test on a small area of your skin before using a product containing salt on your entire body.

Can I use cosmetic grade salt as a body scrub?

Thinking of whipping up a handmade salt body scrub? You’re in luck! Most cosmetic grade salts make an excellent addition to this product type, lending their natural exfoliating properties and coarse grain to the smooth removal of dead skin cells across the body.

Most scrubs of this nature work best when applied in small circular motions and rinsed off with warm water.

Before you start crafting, be sure to double-check your recipe to make sure that your chosen salt and other ingredients are suited for this project type!

Can cosmetic salt be used in a bath soak?

Cosmetic grade salt has been used as bath soaks in one form or another for many years - lending properties from muscle relaxation to skin softening to aching athletes, new parents, and everyone in between. Whether added to warm water in its most natural form or mixed with botanicals such as rose petals to produce a completely unique bath soak product, there are many ways this age-old ingredient can be used in bathing.

Of course, some cosmetic salts are more suited to bath soak making than others, so make sure to make the right selection for the best possible end results. Some of our most popular include Epsom salt, Himalayan pink salt, and Dead Sea salt.

Can I use cosmetic grade salt in hair products?

Cosmetic grade salt is a mainstay in a number of handmade haircare products - meaning it’s certainly suitable for use in some! Be sure to double-check your instructions, formula, and required ingredients to determine suitability on an individual basis.

In general, this natural mineral has been used for centuries in hair care products for its texturising, volumising qualities. Take salt sprays as an example - they’re one of the best ways to create those coveted undone beachy waves! When used correctly, salt may also help exfoliate the scalp and remove excess oil and build-up, making it an effective ingredient for clarifying shampoos and scalp scrubs.

Can I make my own cosmetics using cosmetic grade salt?

As their name suggests, you can definitely make your own cosmetics using cosmetic grade salt! Depending on the type of salt you choose, you may be able to create exfoliating scrubs, toners, bath bombs, soaks, and other skincare and other bathing products. In addition, this ingredient can make a great thickening agent.

Each type of cosmetics grade salt - from Epsom to Dead Sea - has unique qualities and best uses, meaning it’s important to do your research before making your final selection. Why not browse our individual product descriptions above for more information?

Does salt dry out the skin?

Salt can have a drying effect on the skin, especially when used in high concentrations or left on the skin for extended periods. This is because it can absorb moisture from its surroundings – meaning when it’s applied to the skin , it can pull out some natural oils and moisture, potentially leading to dryness. It's the same reason why seawater can make your skin feel tight and dry after a prolonged swim.

Don’t let this information prevent you from using salt in your creations! When added to the right formulations and when used correctly, it can offer numerous benefits, such as exfoliating dead skin cells, increasing circulation, and providing essential minerals.

What are the health benefits of Epsom salt?

Cosmetic grade Epsom salt, in its simple and most pure form, brings major mineral benefits to the table in the form of magnesium and sulphate. By soaking in a dissolved mixture of warm water and this ingredient alone, you'll be able to increase your body’s levels of these two vital materials simply through skin absorption, opening up the possibility of many health benefits including increased muscle relaxation, reduced levels of inflammation, and a general sense of relaxation. Externally, it makes for a great natural exfoliant too!

Is sea salt or Himalayan salt better for skin?

Both sea salt and Himalayan salt have unique skin benefits.

Sea salt, harvested from evaporated seawater, is rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which can help balance and hydrate the skin. It's generally known for its exfoliating and detoxifying properties.

Himalayan salt, on the other hand, is prized for its purity and rich mineral content, including iron, which gives it its distinct pink hue. It's believed to nourish the skin, potentially helping soothe muscles and reduce inflammation.

Both salts can be beneficial for the skin. Which you choose should be determined by how you’d like your final product to perform, and what type of skin you’d like it to cater to.
