What is organic castor oil?

Organic castor oil is extracted by cold pressing from the castor beans. Our organic castor oil is 100% pure and hexane free.

It is yellow in colour and has a neutral scent. Our organic castor oil is certified organic by the Soil Association. We are inspected annually to make sure we comply with their strict regulations.

Origin and History

Castor oil was first discovered in 4000 BC in Egyptian tombs. The Egyptians used it in embalming practice and oil lit lamps.

Castor oil has also been used in cosmetics for hair, skin and nails. Ancient Greeks and Romans used the oil in medicine but also to whiten skin and promote hair growth.

Today castor oil is a prominent carrier oil in cosmetic products for both skin and hair.

Organic castor oil for skin

Castor oil has a comedogenic rating of 1 which means it is very unlikely to clog pores. It is suitable for all skin types including oily skin, acne prone skin and dry skin.

It is commonly used to help promote eyelash growth and eyebrow growth. However, these benefits have not been scientifically proven.

When castor oil is great in cold process soap making as it adds creaminess, conditioning and bubbling to the soap bar.

Make your own skin treatment with organic castor oil

Ingredients

• Organic, unrefined shea butter 500g 

• Organic, extra virgin coconut oil 500g 

• Organic castor oil 350ml 

• Essential oils (optional)

Method

1. Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a microwave or in a bowl over boiling water.

2. Once fully melted, add your organic castor oil.

3. Allow to cool a little, and then put your bowl in your fridge or freezer.

4. Once the mixture looks like it is starting to set, whisk it until it form a whipped consistency. 

5. Now it is ready to use!

6. This skin treatment goes a long way, so only apply a small amount to the skin.

• Macadamia nut oil 100ml

• Hemp oil - cold pressed 10ml

• Neem oil - cold pressed 10ml

Method

1. Mix the castor oil, macadamia oil, hemp oil and neem oil in a bowl.

2. Once fully combined, pour the mixture into a bottle of your choice.

3. Now your hair treatment is ready to use!

4. Apply the treatment to dry hair or damp hair. Massage it into the scalp and wash it out with shampoo.
