What is lavender oil?

Our organic lavender oil (also known as lavandula angustifolia) is extracted through steam distillation from the flowers of organic lavender plants. The oil has a light floral aroma and is a pale green to yellow colour.

It is extremely popular in cosmetics, perfumes and aromatherapy. Our organic lavender is certified organic by the Soil Association. We are inspected annually to make sure we comply with their strict regulations.

You can find the technical documents here.

Origin & History

Lavender is native to the Mediterranean region, the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia. It is thought to have been discovered around 2500 years ago. Traces of lavender were found in ancient Egypt and ancient Rome.

Traditionally, it was used for perfumery purposes and in bath water. In Ancient Greece, they used the essential oil for embalming practices.

It was even a popular perfume in Ancient Egypt. It was also used for its fragrance when washing and bathing in Ancient Rome. In the 20th century the essential oil became more popular in southern Europe.

A french chemist in the 1930s, René-Maurice Gattefossé, is said to have burned his hand in his laboratory and used the essential oil to help treat the burn. He was so surpised by the oils quick healing process, that he published a book, “Aromathérapie: Les Huiles Essentielles, Hormones Végétales,”

Today, lavender is one of the most popular and recognisable essential oil. It is used to help relax and soothe the mind in aromatherapy. It is also used in the cosmetics industry for its distinctive aroma.

How to Store Your Essential Oils

It should be stored in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight. This helps to stop the oil from degrading overtime and to help prolong the quality. Make sure to keep the essential oil out of reach of children.

Safety Precautions

We do not recommend direct application of essential oils on the skin as this could cause sensitivity, inflammation and irritation.

Essential oils can be used in skincare products, however they must be diluted by adding a few drops to a carrier oil.

It is not suitable for consumption, and please consult a doctor before use in pregnancy. It is recommended to do a patch test with the dilute oil to check for sensitive skin or irritation to the oil.
