Why Make Your Own Deodorant?

If you have sensitive skin or you’re just tired of using deodorants that are full of harsh chemicals, it’s time to make your own natural deodorant.

While there are more natural deodorants available on the market, they are getting increasingly more expensive. So why buy them when you can make your own for a fraction of the price?

Homemade deodorant is so easy to make and only uses a few ingredients! Making your own deodorant also means you can use nourishing ingredients so it won’t dry the skin out!

Sodium Bicarbonate

How Does it Work?

The main ingredient in natural deodorants is sodium bicarbonate. This is the most important ingredient as this is what reduces the smell of body odour!

Sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline substance that neutralises the acid in sweat that causes body odour.

We also use arrowroot powder in a diy deodorant as it is naturally very absorbent and can help absorb sweat. However, it does not absorb all of the sweat, especially during exercise or hot weather.

Does Sodium Bicarbonate Cause Irritation?

Sodium bicarbonate can cause sensitivity and irritation for some people! We have tested this recipe and did not come across any irritation, but it can vary depending on the person. If this occurs you may need to reduce the amount of sodium bicarbonate as your skin is likely more sensitive to it.

It is very important to do a patch test before using the deodorant to check for any irritation or reactions!

Does it Stop Sweating?

It's important to understand that natural deodorants help control body odour, but they do not stop sweating!

The only thing that prevents sweating is an antiperspirant. However, these contain harsh ingredients like aluminium that block the glands that cause sweating. Natural deodorants focus on neutralising odour and absorbing moisture using natural ingredients.

So while you may still sweat, you can be sure the sweat won’t smell!

  • Make sure to get any clumps out of the mixture, otherwise it will be very grainy.

How to Use it?

You can buy a reusable roll on deodorant dispenser for easy application of the natural deodorant. Alternatively, you can reuse a lip balm tin and apply a thin layer to the skin.

Essential Oils For Natural Deodorant

Adding essential oils can add a beautiful, lasting aroma to the deodorant! Here are some of our favourite essential oils for a natural deodorant:

Please note, essential oils can cause irritation if too much is added. You only need to use a small amount in your natural deodorant as they are very concentrated. Make sure to check category 2 in the IFRA document to find the maximum usage rate!
