Why Make Your Own Eyeliner?

The ingredients list on store bought eyeliners are so long and full of chemicals. Do you really want to put that on your skin?

Whether you have sensitive skin or you are just looking for an alternative, it’s time to simplify your makeup with a homemade eyeliner!

A homemade eyeliner can be made with just beeswax, oils and black iron oxide (or any other pigment).

Making your own eyeliner allows you to understand exactly what you are putting on your eyes. You can even customize the base ingredients of this DIY eyeliner to suit your needs. If you want to use a different natural oil, try jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, avocado oil and more!

It only takes a few ingredients to make and it is very simple!

What is Black Iron Oxide?

This is the pigment we have chosen to create a strong black colour in our eyeliner. It is a natural pigment and it is safe to use on the skin!

Black iron oxide is a matte colour, so your homemade eyeliner will be a matte black shade. However, if you want to explore more creative options, check out our mica powder range!

What Recipes Should You Avoid?

We’ve seen many people simply mixing water and activated charcoal or black pigment to make a natural liquid eyeliner. So we put it to the test!

On the surface, it makes a decent pigmented liquid eyeliner. But soon, we found many things went wrong.

The eyeliner dries out over time, so the lovely liquid texture disappears. If you choose to use a pigment for the best colour, it may even stain the skin so you would need polysorbate 80 to avoid this. Not only that, but it won’t last long without any preservatives!

So unless you want to add non natural ingredients like preservatives and polysorbate, it’s not worth it.

Truthfully, natural eyeliners are not going to be as resistant as commercial eyeliners, but a well made natural eyeliner will last! So if you want to make a natural eyeliner, try our DIY eyeliner recipe!

Cream Eyeliner Recipe

This basic recipe uses all natural ingredients! Beeswax is a great film former and natural thickener along with shea butter. We have also chosen a lightweight oil to improve the texture of the final product!

Not only that, but this diy eyeliner will also provide moisturising properties when applied! This recipe offers good wear for everyday use, though it may not be as long-lasting as some commercial formulas.

Ingredients:

Method:

1. Heat the beeswax and butters

  • Weigh the beeswax, argan oil and shea butter into a heatproof bowl.
  • Heat the ingredients in a bowl over boiling water, or a bain marie until they are fully melted. Alternatively, you can melt them in a microwave using short bursts. Ensure you are mixing the ingredients continuously.

2. Add the powder

  • In a separate bowl, weigh out the black iron oxide.
  • Once the beeswax mixture has fully melted, pour in the black oxide mixture.
  • Mix everything in really well until fully combined.

3. Pour into a container

  • While the mixture is still liquid, pour it into a small container or small tin.
  • Leave the eyeliner to set and then it is ready to use!

TIP: This recipe creates a thick cream eyeliner. This recipe is not 100% waterproof or smudge proof, but it is resistant to small amounts of water thanks to the beeswax!

We always recommend doing a patch test before applying directly to the skin to ensure the skin is not irritated by any of the ingredients!

How To Make Colourful Eyeliner

Whether you want to make a natural brown eyeliner with cocoa powder or add a pop of colour, it is very easy to change the colour of the eyeliner with our mica powders.

Our range of mica powders include every colour in the rainbow! So get browsing to find your favourite colour!

Here’s an example of a vibrant blue cream eyeliner using ultramarine blue mica powder

Ingredients:

  • In a separate bowl, weigh out the blue mica powder
  • Once the beeswax mixture has fully melted, pour the mica powder into the liquid oils.
  • Mix everything in really well until fully combined.

3. Pour into a container

  • Pour it into a small container or small tin.
  • Once the mixture has set, your DIY eyeliner is ready to use!

TIP: When you mix the mica powder into the liquid mixture, it will darken a lot in colour. But don’t panic! When the eyeliner is applied to the skin, it will be the colour of the mica powder you chose!

Like the black eyeliner, this recipe is only resistant to small amounts of water. We always recommend doing a patch test before applying directly to the skin to ensure the skin is not irritated by any of the ingredients!

How to Use a Homemade Eyeliner

We recommend using a fine eyeliner brush to apply your homemade eyeliner to the eyelids to get a precise application. Once you apply the eyeliner, allow some time for it to set as it may transfer if it is still wet!

When removing your eye liner, we recommend using a makeup remover to ensure it is fully removed.
