What is a Shimmer Body Oil?

A shimmer body oil is simply a body oil that adds a light shimmery coating over the skin. It is most commonly applied to the arms, shoulders, chest or legs. It’s used to enhance the skin's natural complexion and add a healthy glow!

Why Make Your Own Shimmer Body Oil?

The real question is, why would you not make it yourself? It’s so easy to make and you can make it at home for a fraction of the price of commercial body oils.

A shimmer oil only needs 2 ingredients, natural oils and natural mica powder. That’s it! So you can avoid all those chemicals and unnecessary ingredients in commercial body oils.

This recipe not only leaves the skin glowing, but it contains lightweight oils that nourish and hydrate the skin at the same time.

It is also really easy to customise your own diy shimmer oil by changing the colours, substituting the natural oils to suit your skin type and using your favourite scents! See how you can customise your shimmer body oil here.

3. Add the mica powder

  • Weigh out the mica powder and add this to the mixture.
  • Mix everything together until there are no clumps and everything has combined.
  • Pour it into a bottle of your choice and your shimmer body oil is ready to use!

TIP: Shake before every use! After a while, some of the oil rises to the top of the mixture, but a quick shake will combine the ingredients again. Make sure to do a patch test before using the body oil to check for any skin reactions.

How to Customise Your Shimmer Body Oil

If you don’t want to make a gold body oil, you can easily customise the colour!

Our favourite neutral colours, that we think are perfect for a shimmer body oil, are:

Different Colours of Shimmer Oil

Not only can you change the colour of the body oil, but you can also substitute the oils to suit your skin needs.

We chose jojoba oil and rosehip oil as they are very versatile and are suitable for all skin types. But, if your favourite oil is almond oil, just swap out one of the oils. Look through our range of carrier oils to find the perfect oils for you!

Essential oils are optional in this recipe, so if you have sensitive skin you can leave these out. But if you want to change the fragrance, you must make sure to check the usage rates in category 5A on the IFRA document. Find all of our technical documents here.

How to Use a Shimmer Body Oil

Simply use a dropper to apply a small amount to the skin. Using your hands or a brush, spread the body oil over the skin. Leave the oil to absorb into the skin and enjoy your beautiful glowing skin!
