Why Make Your Own Lip Gloss?

Making your own lip gloss allows you to use natural ingredients that benefit your lips and customise the ingredients or colour to suit you!

If you struggle with sensitivity and dryness, making your own lip gloss allows you to understand exactly what is in the final product. You can also change any of the ingredients if they don’t work for you!

Lip Gloss Recipe

Simple Lip Gloss Recipe

This recipe creates a hydrating natural lip gloss. The lip gloss has a pink tone to it and it feels really nourishing on the lips!

We are using natural oils like argan oil, jojoba oil and vitamin e oil to increase hydration and moisturising properties.

The yellow beeswax and coconut oil add some thickening properties to the lip gloss. However, we are using them in small amounts so the gloss is not solid.

Vegetable glycerin adds amazing hydrating properties and it is especially good for those with sensitive, dry or irritated skin!

We have chosen to use fantasia pink mica powder for its beautiful pink shimmery colour. But you can choose from our range of mica powders if this colour isn’t for you!

Ingredients:

Method:

Beeswax and coconut oil

1. Melt the beeswax and coconut oil

  • Weight the yellow beeswax and organic coconut oil into a bowl.
  • Gently heat the ingredients until they have fully melted.
  • Make sure to occasionally stir the mixture to help the beeswax pellets melt down.

2. Add the oils

  • Measure the vitamin E oil, argan oil, jojoba oil and vegetable glycerin.
  • Add the oils to the melted mixture and whisk them in really well until everything has combined.
Adding pink mica powder

3. Add colour to the lip gloss

  • Weigh the mica powder and add it to your mixture.
  • Mix it together for a few minutes to ensure it has fully dispersed.
  • If you are adding essential oils, add a few drops of your fragrance and mix well.

4. Pour the mixture into your container

  • Once your mixture has combined and cooled, pour it into your container.
  • You can use a lip gloss tube or reuse a lip balm container.
  • Now your homemade lip gloss is ready to use!

How Can You Customise This Recipe?

The easiest ingredients to change are the carrier oils, mica powder and essential oils.

We have chosen carrier oils that are lightweight and super hydrating. But if these don’t work for you, you can substitute them for any carrier oil in our collection. The colour can be easily changed with any of our mica powders. If you want to add some fragrance, have a look at our essential oil suggestions here.

You can also substitute the beeswax and coconut oil, but this may have an affect on the consistency of the lip gloss.

Candelilla wax is a great vegan wax and has a similar feel to beeswax. However, we would suggest reducing the amount as it is a harder wax. For coconut oil, you can try babassu oil as this has a very similar consistency!

We wouldn’t recommend changing the vegetable glycerin!

Essential oil safety

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils cannot be used directly on the lips as they could cause sensitivity, inflammation and irritation. Once they are combined with other ingredients, the essential oil is diluted and safe to use on the lips.

You can find the usage rates for each essential oil on the IFRA document in category 1. However, we recommend adding up to 1% of essential oils to the recipe.

This recipe will only contain a small amount of essential oil. If you are not able to accurately measure small amounts, we recommend leaving the essential oils out to avoid adding too much.

There are some essential oils we would not recommend using in a lip gloss. Some oils are phototoxic and some oils can be more irritating than others. We would recommend avoiding these oils:
